@Francesc Dorca:
the aim of this blog is to collate a list of tutorials from all over the web, thus i cannot give any indication of copyright, you will have to ask the author of each individual tutorial. For what it’s worth, all my personal tutorials (at http://ryanler.wordpress.com/ ) are released under cc-by-sa
I’ve just written this tutorial on making a smooth wave shape starting with a triangle. It’s much easier than drawing by hand and gives a smooth finish.
I have a suggest. I wanna start in the webdesign world.. so I would like work with Inkscape. My doubt is in how to make a web design layout. Could be possible a tutorial aobut this ?
Me again. I’ve written a few more Inkscape tutorials (http://hereshowididit.com/tag/inkscape/) including drawing an orchid and simple speech bubbles.
Please feel free to use any of them you think would be useful. Most have SVGs available for download to accompany the tutorial.
Cheers,
I would like to know does Inkscape has the ability to mix photos together with some music in the background? I would like to try out Inkscape, so hope to hear from you soon.
Hey!
I have a suggestion, I want to learn how to put different pictures together, sorta like blending. I want it to be beginner’s style. Since I’m starting to design layouts! It would be a great help if somebody made a tutorial like this!
Thanks!
Yikes!
It’s not like me to overlook replies to my messages. But somehow I did not see your reply to my 2-28-08 message. Sorry ryan, I’m really, really sorry. Because I do SO appreciate the list of tutorials that you made, following my suggestion! And I did notice the topic thread at InkscapeForums.com (which I think is a sticky/pinned now). I use the list every time I visit this site (which is fairly often). It meets my needs in every way. Thank you very much!
Also I wanted to suggest a tutorial on how to use tiled clones to create a webpage background, using Inkscape. Ideally this would include the proper code for the webpage. I have learned basic html, but am still quite fuzzy about xml. However, I’m up for learning whatever is appropriate
The 1st and last of those don’t quite extend to getting the background on a webpage. And I can’t seem to get heathenx’s screencast to display. Granted it may come down to spending some time troubleshooting to get it to play. But it would be great if this topic is addressed in written form somewhere.
Thanks for your help. And especially thanks for the list of tutorials. It really is a great resource!
I have been searching for a tool that can be used to design furniture. I worked with Blender briefly but found that 3D visualisations aren’t necessary. I then found Inkscape. I fumbled and stumbled my way through a successful drawing that I was then able to use when working with wood.
It would be very interesting to see how someone knowledgeable would tackle a similar project. For example, a drawing of cabinet, chest of drawers or a bookcase with specific dimensions that would be used as a cutting guide. If there where then some way to create an exploded view of the same project, that would be great.
I’m trying to draw a cobblestone or slate garden path. So it is an irregularly patterned region bounded by Bezier curves (not symmetric). Is this even possible without drawing each individual stone and shading it?
I did this tutorial a little while ago showing a quick method for creating tribal-esque in inkscape. I’m not sure if it’s worth linking to, but it’s worth a shot.
How to make letter stencils. I plan to use Inkscape to make 1 inch tall letters in acetate that I can use to spray-paint text onto my bike. Right now, I am trying to figure out if Inkscape supports outline fonts. If it does, that would probably make this task pretty easy.
I would like tutorial on how to save and manage the files in Inkscape.
It totally confuses me and I just want to be able to figure out how to save images
as png or more commonly used files I use like jpg, tga know its possible but I can’t remember how.
The import/export and save as sections confuse me too.
As others requested, I’d love a simple tutorial on raster image vectorialization. I work with cad software and I spend entire days copying buildings design from jpegs. By the way thanks for this great soft. bye bye
Im very new to inkscape and I downloaded it because I bought a Cricut and there are a lot cute files in SVG format. However, I can not find a simple tutorial how to open an SVG file in inkscape and separate all the pieces in the file and save it so that when I open it in SCAL (SURE CUTS A LOT) which I use with my cricut, they remain SEPARATE.
THANKS….ANSA
I’m having a huge problem with the simplify path function after creating a vector, I would like to see an alternative to this, which I know has just got to be out there. As it stands now, I might as well just trace the path myself from scratch, that’s how many nodes there are to delete and adjust.

I’d like to see some more information on “Texting” like importing and modifying text to be reshaped and used in woodwork as word art and cut out in various shapes! Example: I Love you written out in a hart shape or fish in the shape of a fish ect.
Any help that could be provided would be appreciated.
Thank you for your help and support.

A tutorial how to plan the website design in Inkscape, do the creative part in a RAD-style of way – and then finally export the parts in slices as PNG etc. for website design.
Perhaps you could take the inskcape example files from 960 CSS Framework and also include that in the tutorial.
I wish to know how to make a 3d box that can have text on see > http://www.thedesignloft.co.uk a quarter way down the page you will the boxes with text on I want to create the same effect using inkscape…
Found this irritator tut, that is interesting, but not particularly well written. Tried doing something myself, but not quite good enough yet. THought it would a good one to do.
I do not have a tutorial made or even know of one out there, but I would like to see one that shows how to make a simple present like shown in this icon package.
I’m trying to figure out how to lay text down on it’s back, giving it perspective, as if it is moving away from you. Think, the old Star Wars introduction.
i’m not sure u can do that with this program, but if it is possible could u post a tutorial that explains how to insert text inside a bold character (i would like to place the name of my company inside a large capital “S” for its logo). if its possible to do that i’d appreciate the help. thanks
A tutorial showing how to vectorize a scanned sketch would be nice. i.e. I create the perfect drawing on scratch paper (or a napkin, for that matter), I scan it, and then use it for the basis of a vector drawing…
I have an idea more than a suggestion for a tutoril. It would be cool to see more holiday related tutorials. For example pumpkins, bats, santa, stockings, easter bunny, etc…
i write two tutorial of the fisrt it`s how make a credic card and other how made a cellphone ericcson, but are in spanish i will write more so visit my blog here http://tutspsd.blogspot.com for saw the news.
I found your site on a tutorial directory. We recently launched tutorialgrad.com. It’s similar to those other tutorial sites only easier for you. All you have to do is submit your RSS Feed once, we do the rest. We will check your feed for tutorials and post them daily, all with direct links to your site (we don’t frame your content). If you are interested please check it out and let us know what you think.
what a brilliant tracing app – much better results than both illustrator and corel draw. If only I knew how to set the trace to keep white instead of removing it.
I’m pretty new at this and I was going over the tutorials. Is there any that does any kind of graffiti art or that elaborates more on the current tutorials?
What I mean is there’s certain tools that are used during some of the tutorials, and they tell you to use them, but they don’t tell you what they do overall. I hope it makes sense x.x I was also wondering if there are any brushes or anything similar like in photoshop that would help with certain effects?
Hi I am interested in whatever possibilities the software has when it comes to reading greek fonts, unix or opentype, as programs as Illustrator do not seem to cope with them. I need a software that reads greek fonts and has the possibility to outline them, as adobe calls it, or convert to curbs as corel calls it.
Hi, I wanted to know if you could make a tutorial on seperating colors for silkscreening on Inkscape? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks a bunch.
Inkscape is very suitable to make stencils for silkscreening. I write a short step-by-step instruction and publish that shortly. It is very similar to inking comics.
For now:
1. Use only black and white in your end product
2. Draw the outlines as vectors on one layer
3. Duplicate and move all objects that you want colour filled to a separate layer (one layer per colour). You can move objects to other layers by Shift-PageUp / Shift-PageDown. You must create layers first (use the layer menu).
4. Add the fill to the objects on those layers (left click with the cursor on the colour paletter) or by use of the paintbucket. Either reduce the stroke width or use a small offset to ensure that the fill continues up to (or under) the outline layer. Note: all objects are to be filled with black only to quarantee optimum quality of your stencil.
5. Hide and show each layer when printing your transparency film.
Note: of course you should optimize your printing area. If your stencil can hold multiple objects for your print there is no need to move the objects to separate layers persay (or hide those layers during printing).
I hope this provides enough info for a quick start.
Hey!
I love your program, and heard from a firend that you can make garment patterns and grade it. But i cant find out how.
So, if you could make a tut about that, it would be awesome for all textile freaks like me
When you talk about garment patterns, I assume you’d want to draw patterns on grid marked paper? Are there specific requirements for that?
If I remember my mums sewing patterns correctly, there were always multiple size patterns drawn on the same sheet. The Inkscape path offset features would be awsome for that. If you provide me with a few pointers I’ll see what I can come up with.
I know I’m going to hear about this, but since I cannot find one on logos I thought I’d ask if there are any logo tutes around? And in asking for this I would be a firs-timer when it comes to Vector-ing.
If you just type in “Logo design Inkscape” in any major search engine, you would find quite a few of them. I write tutorials (also on request) but I find it hard to imagine what a “logo design tutorial” would teach specifically. Vectors are size independent and for that reason outstanding to do vector creation, but there is nothing really special further.
The hardest part about logo creation is finding a good concept that works with the company name and suits the company mission. And the only other aspect is to take the target media into account (web only, or also for physical forms / brochures etc).
If you have something particular that needs to be explained in a tutorial, perhaps you can elaborate on that and we tutorial writers can take that into account.
As I know it’s possible would you create a video that shows how you can use Inksape. To make at lease make a bodice for pattern making ( that is garment making) Basically I want to see how to move from point to point in cm’s. For precise pattern making. Regards, Abigail
Hi.
i just wrote a mini howto on how to draw circuits.
Thought it might be useful to someone: http://kevinalle.com.ar/circuits_tutorial.jpg
Maybe you can make a good tutorial about it.
Seconded. There’s a lot of fantastic tutorials here, but at the moment I am trying to find a tutorial for smoke or steam and it’s a little unwieldy to search through all of this information. It’s very rare that I need to stumble upon things to do with inkscape – I’m usually trying to figure out how to perfect a particular part of a vector.
I am working on a business card for my catering company. I have a sketch drawn by hand of an open winged dove. I am struggling in my attempt to recreate that dove with inkscape. Is there any way to show a tutorial on creating an open winged dove, where I can still alter it to how I drew it by hand? Or can I upload a scan of my hand drawing and alter the image? I really appreciate any feedback. It is an open winged dove, with head/beak to the left.
I’m a complete newby and I want to create a 9-ball graphic for my pool team. I plan to use it with my Make The Cut software for the cricut. HELP….I’ve played around with it and I just make a big mess
hey!! I’m new to the site. I’m just wondering how to bend the text I’ve put in my design. (pin button design, like i want to bend the text example maybe word ‘growing’. i want that word to bend just like perfect bend with the circumference of the pin button.circle pin button.)
I’m not a good Englishman. i hope you understand.
Thank you!!!
I wish a tutorial on how to make a 1680 x 1050 wallpaper with gradients without any unwanted banding effect. Tried this many times and seems impossible.
Just created a tutorial for making wallpapers…. Though I think banding might be something with Inkscape… my suggestion for that would be to export at a really high resolution then scale it down in Gimp.
SUGGESTION:
A tutorial on how to set Inkscape’s default settings. This is something users would find useful. However the panel might be too daunting for some users.
Example: Under Inkscape Preferences (Shirt-Ctrl-P) is “Interface”. I’ve finally tinkered with “Zoom correction factor (in %)”. I put a ruler up to my monitor and adjusted the % until the lines on the screen matched the ruler.
Now when I display a piece of paper at 8.5 x 11, monitor displays the paper exactly. No more need to print things to make sure the size is accurate.
I just looked at an Illustrator tutorial and used the concepts from it to make my own. I created a tutorial on how to create textures in backgrounds and text only using Inkscape.
I’d love to see some “vectorize a person” tutorials, to add the pop-art style to a photo of someone. Even something simple like “convert a photo to a 4-tone image” type tutorial would be welcome!
He has written a C++ program that takes the formula and produce a bunch of numbers that can be imported to Excel and converted into an egg-shape. But it is not vector, and I would very much like to have an actual vector graphic from this formula.
@Malte Rödl & Sebastian Kraft:

Thanks! Love your site.

WEBSITE DESIGN IN INKSCAPE
A tutorial how to plan the website design in Inkscape, do the creative part in a RAD-style of way – and then finally export the parts in slices as PNG etc. for website design.
Perhaps you could take the inskcape example files from 960 CSS Framework and also include that in the tutorial.

Any suggestions welcome

I’m pretty new at this and I was going over the tutorials. Is there any that does any kind of graffiti art or that elaborates more on the current tutorials?
@Lety T.
Could you elaborate please?
What I mean is there’s certain tools that are used during some of the tutorials, and they tell you to use them, but they don’t tell you what they do overall. I hope it makes sense x.x I was also wondering if there are any brushes or anything similar like in photoshop that would help with certain effects?
@Lety T.
Did you consider reading documentation so nicely linked from Help menu?
Hi I am interested in whatever possibilities the software has when it comes to reading greek fonts, unix or opentype, as programs as Illustrator do not seem to cope with them. I need a software that reads greek fonts and has the possibility to outline them, as adobe calls it, or convert to curbs as corel calls it.
@Konstantin
Yes, Inkscape supports Unicode fonts including those containing Greek alphabet.
P.S. I always found it best to download application and see for my self
Hi, I wanted to know if you could make a tutorial on seperating colors for silkscreening on Inkscape? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks a bunch.
Hi BigRich,
Inkscape is very suitable to make stencils for silkscreening.
Cheers,
Syllie
Syllie,
Thanks for the tips…I’ll give it a try and see what I come up with.
Thanks,
BigRich

There’s a new tutorial on creating Iphone styled Icons with Inkscape. It’s in Italian but you can use google translate.

Hey!
I love your program, and heard from a firend that you can make garment patterns and grade it. But i cant find out how.
So, if you could make a tut about that, it would be awesome for all textile freaks like me
Im a fashion studnet from sweden!
Thanks
Hi Linda,
When you talk about garment patterns, I assume you’d want to draw patterns on grid marked paper? Are there specific requirements for that?
If I remember my mums sewing patterns correctly, there were always multiple size patterns drawn on the same sheet. The Inkscape path offset features would be awsome for that. If you provide me with a few pointers I’ll see what I can come up with.
Cheers,
Syllie
I know I’m going to hear about this, but since I cannot find one on logos I thought I’d ask if there are any logo tutes around? And in asking for this I would be a firs-timer when it comes to Vector-ing.
Hi Rich,
If you just type in “Logo design Inkscape” in any major search engine, you would find quite a few of them.
Cheers,
Syllie
As I know it’s possible would you create a video that shows how you can use Inksape. To make at lease make a bodice for pattern making ( that is garment making) Basically I want to see how to move from point to point in cm’s. For precise pattern making. Regards, Abigail

How to draw the human body. Torso, head, arms, legs, hands, feet: everything.
What specifically are you looking to do? I think that could be a fun tutorial to make. Smoke and fire? Steam from a pot? Anything specific in mind?

Here is my tutorial:

HI !
I’ve launched a new wordpress site for Inkscape (end gimp and scribus) absolute beginners.
Here are the three “formers” link :
http://www.freenambule.com/2010/09/22/inkscape-01-decouvrir-linterface-part-1/
http://www.freenambule.com/2010/09/26/inkscape-01-decouvrir-linterface-partie-2/
http://www.freenambule.com/2010/09/30/inkscape-02-rond-mignon-tutoriel/
It’s for French (and written in french) but I hop it could help the ones that don’t dare to take a try to Inkscape.
(and sorry if my english is awful).
have a nice day !!

I’d like to make a brochure. I’ve used vector programs to make brochures but I can’t find a template I can use for inkscape.
I found several good tutorials at youtube,
http://www.youtube.com/user/cuttingtimes
The caster also got a blog,

Hi!
I would like a tutorial on how to create an vector egg-shape out of this formula:
(x^2+y^2)^2=a*(x^2)+(a-b)*x*(y^2)
a=4, b=3.2
When b is 3.2 the shape is most like an real egg. When it is 0 the shape is a circle.
I got this from this site:
http://www16.ocn.ne.jp/~akiko-y/Egg/index_egg_E.html
He has written a C++ program that takes the formula and produce a bunch of numbers that can be imported to Excel and converted into an egg-shape. But it is not vector, and I would very much like to have an actual vector graphic from this formula.
Is that possible?
Kind regards
Svein Daniel
