    Hi everyone.

I am currently in the processs of moving all my tuts to blogspot.com

Susan, the new link for the Valentines day Hearts tut is here at: http://diwan-e-ayyari.blogspot.com/2008/03/how-to-create-valentines-day-hearts.html

Ry, will it be a nuisance to you if I tell you to change the link for the compass tut? (It works currently, but if it is possible to change the link, then I will also move that tut to my new address)

    Thanks!

  10. Dear friends,

I find this blog really interesting, but a big drawback is that I did not find which license is used by the tutorials.

My opinion is that it would be nice using some Creative Commons license for the whole blog and put it on a visible link in the homepage.

I have translated some tutorials into Catalan and would like to publish them into the website of Softcatala (www.softcatala.org) a non-profit NGO that translates software (mainly free software) into Catalan. I have a deep respect for the creators of these tutorials and would never publish them if I’m not allowed to do it.

Will you use such a license for your blog? Who can I ask for permission to publish some turtorials?

    Best regards from Catalonia

    Francesc

    Thanks!

  26. Could you create a tutorial for how to modify the standard barcamp logo at http://barcamp.org/SpreadBarCamp and create something like http://barcamp.org/BarCampLondon5 or similar. Just basically modifying the standard one?

  27. Brynn says:

    Yikes!
It’s not like me to overlook replies to my messages. But somehow I did not see your reply to my 2-28-08 message. Sorry ryan, I’m really, really sorry. Because I do SO appreciate the list of tutorials that you made, following my suggestion! And I did notice the topic thread at InkscapeForums.com (which I think is a sticky/pinned now). I use the list every time I visit this site (which is fairly often). It meets my needs in every way. Thank you very much!

Also I wanted to suggest a tutorial on how to use tiled clones to create a webpage background, using Inkscape. Ideally this would include the proper code for the webpage. I have learned basic html, but am still quite fuzzy about xml. However, I’m up for learning whatever is appropriate ;)

    I have found these tuts:
–create a desktop background by tracing bitmaps and overlaying them
    http://inkscapetutorials.wordpress.com/2008/01/17/create-a-desktop-background-by-tracing-bitmaps-and-overlaying-them/
    and
–Episode 004 – Create Tiled Clones by heathenx
    http://inkscapetutorials.wordpress.com/2007/06/16/inkscape-tutorial-by-heathenx-create-tiled-clones/
    and
    –A Vine Design – A Tiling Example
    http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/TilePattern.html

The 1st and last of those don’t quite extend to getting the background on a webpage. And I can’t seem to get heathenx’s screencast to display. Granted it may come down to spending some time troubleshooting to get it to play. But it would be great if this topic is addressed in written form somewhere.

Thanks for your help. And especially thanks for the list of tutorials. It really is a great resource!

  29. Mike R says:

I have been searching for a tool that can be used to design furniture. I worked with Blender briefly but found that 3D visualisations aren’t necessary. I then found Inkscape. I fumbled and stumbled my way through a successful drawing that I was then able to use when working with wood.

It would be very interesting to see how someone knowledgeable would tackle a similar project. For example, a drawing of cabinet, chest of drawers or a bookcase with specific dimensions that would be used as a cutting guide. If there where then some way to create an exploded view of the same project, that would be great.

    In advance, thanks.

This is a wonderful tool, but I am missing a basic concept, and think it would help me, and many others to understand how to work with an ai formatted file if one wants to use one of the portions of the file. Several files I have downloaded have beautiful design elements with complex backgrounds and all I want to work with is the actual design element, not the element and the background. i had read somewhere to drag the item to the swatches palette then save it (in AI) as an image, but haven’t been able to accomplish that in Inkscape.

Yes, Inkscape supports Unicode fonts including those containing Greek alphabet.

P.S. I always found it best to download application and see for my self :)

  98. BigRich74 says:

Hi, I wanted to know if you could make a tutorial on seperating colors for silkscreening on Inkscape? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

  99. Syllie says:

    Hi BigRich,

Inkscape is very suitable to make stencils for silkscreening. I write a short step-by-step instruction and publish that shortly. It is very similar to inking comics.

    For now:
    1. Use only black and white in your end product
    2. Draw the outlines as vectors on one layer
    3. Duplicate and move all objects that you want colour filled to a separate layer (one layer per colour). You can move objects to other layers by Shift-PageUp / Shift-PageDown. You must create layers first (use the layer menu).
    4. Add the fill to the objects on those layers (left click with the cursor on the colour paletter) or by use of the paintbucket. Either reduce the stroke width or use a small offset to ensure that the fill continues up to (or under) the outline layer. Note: all objects are to be filled with black only to quarantee optimum quality of your stencil.
    5. Hide and show each layer when printing your transparency film.

Note: of course you should optimize your printing area. If your stencil can hold multiple objects for your print there is no need to move the objects to separate layers persay (or hide those layers during printing).

I hope this provides enough info for a quick start.

    Cheers,
    Syllie

If I remember my mums sewing patterns correctly, there were always multiple size patterns drawn on the same sheet. The Inkscape path offset features would be awsome for that. If you provide me with a few pointers I’ll see what I can come up with.

      Cheers,
      Syllie

I know I’m going to hear about this, but since I cannot find one on logos I thought I’d ask if there are any logo tutes around? And in asking for this I would be a firs-timer when it comes to Vector-ing.

    • Syllie says:

      Hi Rich,

If you just type in “Logo design Inkscape” in any major search engine, you would find quite a few of them. I write tutorials (also on request) but I find it hard to imagine what a “logo design tutorial” would teach specifically. Vectors are size independent and for that reason outstanding to do vector creation, but there is nothing really special further.

The hardest part about logo creation is finding a good concept that works with the company name and suits the company mission. And the only other aspect is to take the target media into account (web only, or also for physical forms / brochures etc).

If you have something particular that needs to be explained in a tutorial, perhaps you can elaborate on that and we tutorial writers can take that into account.

      Cheers,
      Syllie

Seconded. There’s a lot of fantastic tutorials here, but at the moment I am trying to find a tutorial for smoke or steam and it’s a little unwieldy to search through all of this information. It’s very rare that I need to stumble upon things to do with inkscape – I’m usually trying to figure out how to perfect a particular part of a vector.

I am working on a business card for my catering company. I have a sketch drawn by hand of an open winged dove. I am struggling in my attempt to recreate that dove with inkscape. Is there any way to show a tutorial on creating an open winged dove, where I can still alter it to how I drew it by hand? Or can I upload a scan of my hand drawing and alter the image? I really appreciate any feedback. It is an open winged dove, with head/beak to the left.

    SUGGESTION:
A tutorial on how to set Inkscape’s default settings. This is something users would find useful. However the panel might be too daunting for some users.

Example: Under Inkscape Preferences (Shirt-Ctrl-P) is “Interface”. I’ve finally tinkered with “Zoom correction factor (in %)”. I put a ruler up to my monitor and adjusted the % until the lines on the screen matched the ruler.

Now when I display a piece of paper at 8.5 x 11, monitor displays the paper exactly. No more need to print things to make sure the size is accurate.

    Hi!

I would like a tutorial on how to create an vector egg-shape out of this formula:
    (x^2+y^2)^2=a*(x^2)+(a-b)*x*(y^2)
    a=4, b=3.2

When b is 3.2 the shape is most like an real egg. When it is 0 the shape is a circle.

I got this from this site:
    http://www16.ocn.ne.jp/~akiko-y/Egg/index_egg_E.html

He has written a C++ program that takes the formula and produce a bunch of numbers that can be imported to Excel and converted into an egg-shape. But it is not vector, and I would very much like to have an actual vector graphic from this formula.

    Is that possible?

    Kind regards
    Svein Daniel
